Hello Old friend
Chapter One: Painful Memories

You sigh as you stare out at the harsh, frozen mountains and glaciers that surrounded your home. Well, the cave that you called home. Shaking your large head, you shut your eyes for a moment and turn away from the mouth of the cave to pad back inside the cavern. It wasn't the ideal place to live, but being a full grown dragon larger than an elephant means you don’t get much of a choice.

You lived in solitude, far from the bustling cities of humans who had long forgotten your existence, or simply called you a myth. You were one of the last of your kind, a dragon, beautiful and deadly, but near extinction. Dragons can live almost forever, but of course they can be and often are killed, either by humans or by their own kind in fights. You remember a time, so long ago it seems, when other dragons flew through the air with hardly any fear at all, and humans treated your kind as equals, friends even, and not the nuisances and thieves of their precious livestock as they came to know and treat dragons as. It was their own fault! They are greedy and naïve, and have no concept for the lives of other beings. They ravaged the land and killed off most of the dragon’s natural prey, giving them no choice but to take what they had to, be it cattle, horses, sheep or goats, it was what they had to do to survive, and the humans turned on them.

You shake your head once again, trying to rid yourself of the thoughts as you make your way to the farthest chamber from the entrance of the cave, in it is a hoard of animal pelts and blankets you had stolen over the years to use as a nest, they’re far more comfortable than sleeping on a bed of rocks like some dragons preferred to do. Laying your large but lithe body down on the nest, you heave a heavy sigh, trying not to think of the past. It takes several minutes, but soon you fall into a light sleep and memories cloud your mind.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

                                                                                     ~792 A.D.~

You let out a boisterous roar as you glided through the frosty air above the beautiful fjords of the land that would become known as Scandinavia. Your massive wings made it easy to carry your large (s/c) body into the air, letting you dive and twirl over the frozen land below safely. You were just a juvenile at the time, just around three hundred years old, which is young for a dragon. You weren't even breeding age yet!
Sighing happily, you shut your eyes and feel the air around you, listening to the wind and the cry of gulls as they flew under you, and further down the splashing of waves and laughter of humans as they caught fish from the water and picked berries along the shore, it was a peaceful day, until a powerful gust of wind blew you off track so you ended up right above one of the many beautiful forests in this land. Sighing, you straightened yourself out quickly and started to fly higher into the clouds.

Bad mistake.

As you were flying upward, a downdraft of wind caught you off guard and sent you plummeting down towards the earth, by the time you could have steadied yourself, it would have been much too late. Quickly, you wrapped your wings around your body and tucked your head down against your chest, a terrified screech left your mouth just as you crashed into the forest below. The branches of trees clawed and raked against your scale covered body as you slid down between them before hitting the ground hard with a thud. Luckily, your hide was thick enough and your scales strong enough to keep you from getting injured by the nasty branches, or so you thought. As you tried to stand, it became very clear that your front left paw had been injured during the rough landing, and as you spread your shimmering wings, you saw what looked like tears raking through the leathery membrane of your right wing. Whining in pain and dismay, you laid your head down on the ground with a huff, knowing you couldn’t possibly fly with wounds like that, and if you couldn’t stand with your wounded paw, you couldn’t walk very well at all.

It takes a few minutes for you to finally manage to rise to your feet, though just as you are, a twig snaps just to the side, alerting you to the presence of something else that had come very close. Narrowing your stunning (e/c) eyes, your slit, cat-like pupils dilate and shrink repeatedly as they scan the area.  You watched closely as a young man, no older than eighteen at the most, hesitantly stepped out from behind a tree to reveal himself to you. His fair face was stoic, but you could see the nervousness in his blue-violet eyes, and you could smell small traces of fear coming from his body. He stepped closer, holding a bag of what smelled like herbs close to his chest. After taking a shaky breath, he clears his throat and begins to speak to you.

“G-great dragon, forgive me, I saw you fall.. I brought herbs to heal you if you are wounded.”

What a lovely voice he had, strong and smooth, you were sure you had never heard a voice so lovely and kind in all your years. With a small nod, you open your massive jaws slightly to allow your own voice to flow out for him to hear.

“I thank you, kind human. I am unfortunately wounded. Can you repair my wing?”

You asked this as you spread open your right wing, the one that had been torn, for him to see. Normally you wouldn’t have so readily accepted the human’s help, being the proud creature you were, and it wouldn’t have been wise to trust him right away, but.. There was something about this two legged creature that soothed you and made you feel safe.

With a curt nod, the human began to step closer to you as you laid down and spread out your wing along the ground for him to see. Blood was trickling down slowly from the tears and you frowned as you saw this. Dragon blood was special, it had healing properties and could cure illnesses if the right amount was taken. Luckily, humans had barely started to figure this out so they had no need to hunt your kind down for it like they had been doing recently to collect your scales and horns, but it was only a matter of time, now.

The kind human kneeled on the ground beside the wing and began digging through his bag, pulling out several herbs as well as a small bowl and rock to crush them with. He didn’t waste any time, tossing sprigs and leaves of the herbs into the bowl before crushing them into a paste of some sort. You watched him closely as he carefully began to smear the paste onto the tears, taking care to be as gentle as he could. Once that was done, he stepped back again and pulls out a needle and thread, looking up at you hesitantly, as if scared you might bite his head off if he tried anything more without permission.

“I.. I need to stitch the tears together, so you may fly again. It may hurt.”

With another small nod, you allowed him to begin sewing up one of the many tears in the membrane of your precious wing, letting out a soft hiss of pain now and then as the needle was pushed into your flesh and the thread was pulled through, but it was still easy to put up with, in the end. It surprisingly didn’t take that long for all the rips in your wing to be mended, a pleased grunt left your throat as you looked over the wonderful job the human had done.

Despite for the dull pain and the brown thread that went across the membrane in places, you could hardly tell that it had been torn in the first place. Casting a grateful look towards the young man, you dip your head to him before trying to stand once again, only to cry out in pain and fall back down as pressure was put on your wounded front paw.

Gasping softly, the human hurried to your front to see what the problem was. He kneeled at your side looking up at you for a moment before hesitantly reaching forward and placing his hands on the obviously wounded limb, it was slightly twisted and there were large pieces of bark and branch dug into the softer, less scaly pad of your huge paw. Being mindful of your massive curved talons that resembled meat hooks, he begins pulling out the overgrown splinters and covering the left over wounds with the same paste that he used on your wing. It hurt, much more than when he had been sewing up your wing, but you were more than grateful for this strange but kind human’s help.

It took longer for him to fix your paw than it did your wing, and after several minutes passed you began to feel rather bored. With a small huff, you crane your long, elegant swan-like neck up to look up to the sky for another moment before looking back down at the human who was so dutifully tending to your wounds.

“Kind human.. What is your name?”

The young man seemed almost shocked that a dragon had asked his name, staring up at you with a bewildered expression for a moment before a small smile pulls at his pale lips and he continues fixing up your paw.

“Sigurd. Sigurd Bondevik, miss.”

A smile formed on your muzzle and you nodded slowly, speaking softly as you repeated his name to yourself before you spoke loud enough for him to hear.

“Well then, Sigurd, thank you again for this kindness, I don’t know what I would of done if you hadn’t come along.”

You leaned your head down and gently pressed the end of your muzzle to his cheek, as if you were planting a kiss on it. A blush formed on his face and he looks up at you with wide eyes, his shocked expression caused you to laugh softly and shake your head. The expressions that humans could make were just so cute and amusing to you. After a moment he slowly spoke once again.

“You don’t have to thank me, it’s an honor for me to be able to heal and speak to such a great creature like yourself.”

“You flatter me, dear Sigurd. We dragons aren’t that great, you know.”

“Oh, but you are! You can fly and breathe fire, and you live forever. And you can speak just like we can. And not to mention, you’re stunningly beautiful.”

You smiled and looked down, if dragons could blush, your cheeks would have been red. Sigurd reached out and gently ran his hand down the smooth scales at the base of your neck before hesitantly pulling his hand back and looking back down at your paw that he had placed in his lap.

“I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a dragon with such beautiful scales as yours, either. The color is amazing.”

With a small nod you answer him.

“I was born with a rare color, yes, but it’s not that great having it.. Over the past forty years or so, humans have begun hunting us for our scales and other body parts. My scales being this color makes me a bit of a target.”

Sigurd frowned deeply and nods as he listened, looking down and sighing softly.

“I’ve been hearing about those hunters recently, it’s horrible.. A group of them came into my village the other day trying to sell dragon eyes and horns. I can’t imagine why someone would do such a thing.”

You nodded in agreement before looking up to the sky again.

“The other dragons here are already starting to leave the area.. Either flying further north or to the west to get away from the hunters.”

“What about you?” Sigurd looked up at you as he speaks. “Are you going to leave?”

With a shake of your head, you looked up at the sky for a moment longer before looking back down at the human below you.

“I don’t intend to. This area is my home, I don’t think I could ever bare to leave here, honestly. But if the hunters to come to this area, I suppose I can just keep moving further and further north to be out of their reach. If I’m not mistaken, I don’t think humans can breathe very well in the high mountains.. Perhaps I’ll go there.”

With a soft laugh, Sigurd nods in agreement and smiles lightly up at you.

“That’s where I would go if I was a dragon.. I wish I was, it must be so amazing to be able to fly.”

“It is, there’s really no better feeling than having the wind under your wings.”

You sigh happily with a soft smile and shut your eyes, recalling the feeling as easily as recalling your own name. Sigurd watches your face for a moment before looking back down at your paw. He frowns and looks over it for a moment before taking his cloak off and beginning to gently but firmly wrap it around the appendage to keep the herbal paste over the wounds and hold everything in place. He pins it in place with the pin he was using to keep the cloak on around his neck before he stands and steps back.

“You should be fine now, but I wouldn’t put any pressure on that foot for a while if I were you. Actually.. I wouldn’t fly for a while if I were you, either. At least a few days until they’re more healed. You wouldn’t want the stitches coming undone and causing you to crash again.”

You nod and sigh as you begin to stand, careful not to fall over our put any pressure on your twisted paw. After looking around for a moment and thinking of somewhere you could stay for the next few nights, Sigurd speaks again.

“There’s a small cave not far from here, it’s safe, and I’m sure it’s just big enough for you to fit. I can show you where it is, if you like?”

You nod and smile gently “Yes, please, I would like that.”

And with that, Sigurd began to lead you along slowly through the trees, heading towards a small mountain, which was really more like a large hill, which rose up in the middle of the forest. It didn’t take long at all to reach the foot of the hill, and after a few more minutes of walking around the base, you came across the opening to a decently sized cave. Sigurd was hesitant at first, looking around at the forest floor to make sure there were no animal tracks leading into the cave before he nodded and slowly walked inside. You followed behind him, easily being able to see everything in your surroundings with your keen eyesight. With a small smile, you looked down at Sigurd before laughing softly. He had his arms stuck out in front of him and was walking in a rather odd way, trying his hardest not to trip over or run into anything. He frowned and stopped, crossing his arms over his chest as he did.

“I can’t see as well as you, so don’t make fun of me.”

“Sorry, dear Sigurd~ you just looked so odd, I couldn’t help it.”

Sigurd’s frown soon turns into a soft smile and he looks away as he continues walking along slowly. Once you reach the back of the cave, you look around slowly, spotting a pile of old half burnt wood on the floor. Opening your mouth and exhaling hard, you allow flames to burst from your throat and light the wood. The sudden light and heat caused Sigurd to jump and take a few steps back before he realized what had happened and relaxed.

“People must have camped here before, good thing they left the wood behind.”

You nodded in agreement before looking around the chamber for a moment, sniffing at the air before deciding it really was safe. Slowly, you sit down to rest and sigh softly as you look over your wounded paw with a frown. Sigurd sat down across from you and tilted his head as he watched your every move with curiosity and wonder in his eyes. You looked at him before smiling lightly and laying down.

“You stare at me as if you’ve never seen a dragon before.”

“What? O-oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to-“

He was cut off as you laughed warmly at his reaction, you found him simply adorable. He pouted and crossed his arms over his chest as he looked away, which made you laugh even more. After a moment you quieted down and smiled over at him.

“Sorry, dear Sigurd.. You’re expressions are just too precious.”

With a sigh, he nodded and looked back over at you “It’s fine,..”

“Oh, I never told you my name, did I?”

He shook his head in response. “No, you didn’t.”

You nodded and continued to smile.

“It’s (Name).”

“(Name)… I should have expected that a dragon would have a name as beautiful herself.”

Your eyes widened slightly before you quickly looked to the side with a huff, if you had been human, your cheeks would really have been bright red.

“Do all human men go out of their way to flatter others like you do?”

He chuckled softly and shook his head “Not really, no.”

“Well I’m glad it was you who came to my aide, then.”

He smiled and leaned back on the cave wall behind him.

The two of you spoke for quite a while, talking about anything and everything you could think of. He told you how he was adopted and had no idea who or where is real parents were since he had woken up in the forest all alone one day. You told him about all the amazing things that you had seen over the years, and about all the different dragon species. You found that he especially loved to talk about magic and desperately wanted to learn how to cast spells and curses himself. Hours later, the fire was dying and you were both growing drowsy. Slowly, Sigurd stood and smiled at you as he took a few steps to leave.

“It’s late,.. I have to leave before it gets too dark and I can’t see my way home. I’ll come back tomorrow in the morning to visit you though, if that’s okay?”

“Of course it is, I would enjoy that. Goodnight, dear Sigurd.”

He reaches out and gently pets you muzzle before turning to walk away.

“Goodnight, (Name).”

You watched him walk down the corridor that led to the chamber, watching until he was completely out of sight and you could no longer feel his presence before laying your head down and sighing softly, a small smile on your mouth as you shut your eyes and drifted to sleep.

The next morning, Sigurd showed up bright and early to spend time with you again. He walked you around the whole area outside the cave, showing you his favorite places to hunt and go for walks during the day, he showed you where to find the best mushrooms and herbs to eat.  Before either of you realized it, you had spent the whole day together and it was growing dark again. You walked him back to his village before returning to the cave again.

The next day was the same, he took you down to the river to catch fish and relax. You could tell he was proud of befriending you by the way he would subconsciously puff out his chest and walk with his head raised whenever you would pass any other humans, who stared in awe. Again, the time flew by and it grew dark again, instead of going back to the cave, though, you had him crawl onto your back before carrying him off towards the mountains.
You walked for a while before finally stopping at a high place at the edge of a cliff and laying down with your head tilted up towards the sky. Sigurd tilted his head in confusion before following your gaze and looking up at the sky as well.

“..(Name)? Why did you bring me here?”

You shushed him gently and continued to stare up at the beautiful night sky. “Just watch, Sigurd.. You’ll see it soon.”

He was about to ask what you meant before gasping quietly as beautiful green lights began to dance through the sky. Flickering from blue to purple, and then back to green. It was stunning. Sigurd smiled and reached pet your neck slowly.

“It’s amazing.. I’ve never seen them this close before”

“Want to get closer?”

“What?”

Before he could even give you a clear answer, you were standing at the edge of the cliff with your wings spread

“Hold on to me!”

And with that, you leapt off the edge and glided down through the air, plummeting down towards the rocky land below before straightening yourself out and flying up towards the sky, smiling as you felt the human cling for dear life onto your neck. After a moment of flying up towards the sky, you steady yourself to fly straight, making it easier for Sigurd to hold onto you. When you get no reaction from him, you tilt your head to look back at him, only to find that his eyes were squeezed shut in fear. With a soft chuckle, you slow your flying.

“Sigurd, open your eyes..”

After a moment of silence, you hear him gasp and feel him cling tighter to your neck. You smile and rise higher in the air, getting closer and closer to the beautiful ribbons of light that danced through the sky.
Sigurd began to tear up as he looked around at them, and reached one hand out slowly to feel the air. All was silent as you flew him around, it was completely peaceful.

It couldn’t last too long, though, it was freezing up so high, and your human companion couldn’t take it much longer. Gliding down towards his village slowly, you land with a soft thud outside of it and let him off. As soon as his feet hit the ground, he turns and hugs your muzzle gently, allowing your foreheads to touch as you both shut your eyes for a moment. You enjoyed his embrace greatly, and it made your large heart flutter like a small caged bird. It was over far too soon as he pulled back and smiled gently.

“Goodnight, (Name).”

You smiled back and began to back away. “Goodnight, Sigurd.”

After watching him walk into the village and step into one of the small homes, you turned and began walking back to the cave.

The next day you returned to your real cave, the one you’ve lived in for about ninety years. Sigurd obviously didn’t want you to go, but he knew you had to. You returned to him every single day though, visiting him and letting him ride on your back as you flew all over the land.

This continued on for ten whole months, and during that time the two of you grew closer and closer.

Until one day..

You flew down from your home high in the mountains to visit Sigurd again, you hadn’t gotten the chance to see him yesterday and you were excited but nervous. Today, you were planning on taking him back to your cave and maybe even showing him your human form, something that dragons only showed to their most trusted companions. Even other dragons hardly ever saw another’s human form.
With a smile, you landed with a hard thud at the clearing where you and Sigurd met every day. After a quick look around, and not seeing your human, you decided to lay down and wait. After a while, you sighed and started to stand, it had been nearly an hour and he still hadn’t shown.. What if something had happened? Your mind started to wander to all the horrible things that could have happened to him to make him late. You almost started to panic until you heard several twigs snap behind you, and the breeze brought a familiar scent to your nose. Sighing in relief before turning around, you grin as you see Sigurd walking towards you.

“There you are! I was starting to get-“

You stopped and took a step back as you looked at the other, something wasn’t right.. His eyes were teary and filled with regret, the scent of fear radiated off his form in waves, something really wasn’t right.

“Sigurd? What.. What is it? What’s wrong?”

His voice cracked lightly as he spoke.

“(N-name).. I’m so sorry.”

Before you could ask what he meant, you became aware that he hadn’t come alone. In just moments, several large and burly men had stepped out from behind the trees, some holding wicked weapons that reeked of dragon’s blood, and others holding nets. They began to walk towards you quickly, pushing the now shaking Sigurd out of the way as they did.

You roared in pain as one of the wicked men's swords was sliced through your left flank, raking off many of your beautiful scales and spilling your precious blood all over the ground. In a panic, you swung yourself around and slammed your tail into several of the men, knocking them to the ground.

Looking back at Sigurd once more, you felt tears brim in your eyes as the feeling of betrayal filled your heart. With a mournful roar, you take off into the sky, dodging the arrows that were shot after you by rising higher into the air. Turning your head to look back at the clearing, looking down at Sigurd one last time. He stares up at you, tears running freely down his pale cheeks now. Another mournful roar rises in your throat as you turn to face the mountains.

To the other men, it was just a roar, but to Sigurd, it sounded to him as if you were crying, pleading to know why.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
You awake with a sharp gasp, lifting your head quickly from the ground and looking around frantically before starting to calm down after realized it was just a dream, even though it had been very real at one point.
Looking toward your flank where you had been wounded, you frown as you look over the nasty scar that had been left there by the sword. It hadn’t faded with time, and the scales had never grown back. You notice something wet on your cold cheeks and reach up, wiping it away with the back of your paw, pulling it away to see silvery tears on your scales. You hadn’t even realized that you were crying until now.
Sniffing softly, you wipe your eyes on some of the furs in your nest before standing and walking slowly to the mouth of the cave.
Its morning now, the sun is just starting to peek over the edge of the snow-capped mountains, giving everything a beautiful orange glow. Sitting on the edge of the cliff that juts out in front of your cave, you watch the giant star rise above the mountains, before looking away and standing. As you spread your wings, you look out at the land below you before leaping off and flying down towards the south.
It was dangerous to go out during the day, and to go south closer to where the humans are is even worse..
But you had to feed.
 Wow I probably listened to the Norwegian version of "No Way Out" from brother bear at least twenty times towards the end of writing this.. Anyway! This is just something I thought of the other day while drawing. Almost all of this is a flashback, but I promise the next part will be in the present!
Okay so in this, Norway doesn't know he's a country just yet, and the reason I chose Sigurd for his name instead of Lukas is.. Well, I just thought it'd fit better in this story, plus I like it more.
(s/c) means scale color, just so you know!
Hetalia belongs to Hidekaz Himaruya and you belong to yourself, because you're a badass lady dragon who don't need no one.
